The first illustrious pilgrim on record, in year 950. In a period in which, rather than an ecclesiastical service, being a bishop was more a title of nobility, with all the consequences that this entailed, Gotescalco journeyed along the Way of St James with his entourage and knights. This was recorded due to a curious event.
The Monastery of St Martin was located In the locality of Albelda in La Rioja, very near Logroño. This monastery had an excellent library and with a scriptorium of recognised prestige, as was the case of other monasteries in La Rioja, such as Suso of St Millán de la Cogolla. The well-deserved acclaim of the copyist monks and those responsible for the miniature drawings, made the bishop of Le Puy take a detour from the route to Santiago to commission a copy of a codex held in the library of Albelda: the book of St Idelfonso of Toledo "On the Virginity of María". After returning home, one year later, he went to the monastery to collect the manuscript, which had been copied by Gomesano, the well-known scribe, who recorded this fact in the preface to the copy. This codex, which Napoleon ordered to be copied, is now held in the National Library of France, in Paris.
