La Rioja Museum
Apart from the numerous monuments that
can be found in La Rioja Province, pilgrims who are fond of
Art can admire the precious gems showed in La Rioja Museum,
located in Logroño. The gallery is housed in a Baroque Palace
from the 18th century, representative of Logroño´s civil architecture.
The building was the retreat of General Espartero in the 19th
century.
In 1884 it was acquired by the Government to make it the Episcopal
Palace, but was never used for that purpose. Later on, the
structure was given different uses, until it became a museum
in 1971. The gallery features a selection of archaelogical
pieces and religious works from deserted La Rioja areas along
with 19th century paintings and contemporary works that have
been selected from temporary exhibitions of the museum. |
It also includes a room devoted to ethnography that shows
a variety of everyday life objects , meant to preserve the
Cultural Heritage of La Rioja.
The Museum, located at 23 Plaza San Agustín, is open
Monday through Saturday, from 10:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to
21:00; on Sundays and Festivities from 11:30 to 14:00.
Housed in Espartero Palace, the museum
is made up of three sections: Archaelogy, Art and Ethnography.
The section devoted to Archaelogy shows accidental discoveries
from the 19th century and discoveries from scientific excavations
that begun in 1942.
The Art Section presents religious works collected by the
Comisión Provincial de Monumentos (Province Commission
for Monuments) in the 19th century ; works from sorrounding
mountains; and 19th -century paintings from the Prado Museum
collection deposited in the Museum around 1903. The gallery
also contains Contemporary works of art that have been selected
from temporary exhibitions of the museum.
The Ethnography Section consists of everyday life objects
that have been collected since the 70´s and is meant
to preserve the delicate Cultural Heritage, which is essential
to know our immediate past.
For lack of space, the permanent collection only includes
the Bellas Artes collection.
